Page 1 of 3   Steve Mazzola, who served for the past year as Arlington's first chief
technology officer (CTO), a position embracing town and schools, is
moving in mid-August to a technology-management position in Belmont,
overseeing its public schools.
Mazzola, who was in charge of technology for Arlington public schools
from 2001 until 2007, before the CTO position was created, has an
annual Arlington salary of $100,000, plus a 3 percent cost-of-living
adjustment due July 1, said Caryn Cove Molloy, the town's personnel
director. His annual pay in Belmont will be $109,000, though it will be
prorated to be less because he is starting in August, said Belmont Superintendent
Peter B. Holland.
Asked why he is leaving, Mazzola wrote in an e-mail June 30: "I am taking the position in Belmont because it is a great opportunity. I have really enjoyed my time in Arlington and have worked with a great group of people; all of whom I will miss.
"I am extremely fortunate to be associated with the technical staff in the town and schools who are responsible for all we have accomplished."

Because his responsibilities included oversight of the schools' e-mail system, Mazzola was asked whether his decision to leave is related to issues over the past year involving the Ottoson Middle School. He wrote:
"No, this was simply a good opportunity. The Ottoson situation had no bearing whatsoever."
Mazzola is the second member of the Arlington schools' tech team to announce they are leaving.
YourArlington learned on June 17 that Josephine Antonellis, who works under Mazzola at Ottoson, has resigned to take a position as data manager with the Needham public schools. She declined to say why she is leaving.
Repeated requests to the superintendent's office to learn basic information about Antonellis, including how long she has served the Arlington schools, have gone unanswered.
Antonellis's tenure dates to at least the late 1990s, when she worked with Theresa Jay, Mazzola's predecessor.
