Wins energy travel challenge

An Arlington team participating in a yearlong contest with those from Medford and Cambridge, to see which community can reduce its energy use (and carbon emissions) by the greatest percentage, was the winner June 22. Ten town families are participating, but an unlimited number of companion families may also take part. In the first communitywide challenge event -- the Smart Transit Challenge -- its goal was to to reach several checkpoints while using/releasing the least amount of carbon dioxide.

The Arlington team gained 10,000 points for the yearlong competition, called the Energy Smackdown .

Here are the results according to team, person miles, pounds of CO2 and person milesper pounds of CO2:

    1. Arlington: 352, 2.55, 138

    2. Cambridge: 352, 5.5, 63

    3. Medford: 283, 42.0, 6.7

ImageBill Thompson, a participant, explained the Arlington team's approach:

Our winning strategy was to have the largest team and to bike most of the way. All teams were required to travel as a group by biking, carpooling, and taking public transportation to designated sites in Medford, Boston, Cambridge and Arlington. We had 42 people participate from Arlington, including children biking and children in trailers.

Only one person took the train for that leg of the competition, and seven people carpooled during that required leg of the travel. (Medford carpooled most of the way.)

Our team biked through two thundershowers, too, emerging wet but happy, and eventually victorious.

To participate, register at www.energysmackdown.com.

You need to receive an invitation to join from an existing T\team member, so please send an e-mail request to one of our two
team captains or any of the other team members (if you know one).

Arlington team captains are Laurel Kayne (laurel at maxmediacorp.com) and Scott Smith (scottjsmith2007 at yahoo.com).

When you sign up, they will provide additional details.
