Stop & Shop closed July 6, and the Arlington store is expected to reopen about a month later after a complete renovation, according to manager Ed Kalenoski. “People will be pleasantly surprised,” he said of the Arlington store on Mass. Ave. “It will be a huge positive.”
The renovations will include replacing “every single aisle, case
and fixture with all brand new stuff,” he said in an interview June 20.
The pharmacy will remain open during the renovation and follow its regular schedule. The public will continue to have building access to the pharmacy.
The store will boast a
new color scheme as well as a new floor and new ceiling.
While the basic layout will remain the same, there will be an
expanded produce department as well as larger areas for prepared foods,
fish and natural foods. The deli counter will be brand new and include
Boar’s Head delicatessen products.
Kalenoski said that while the renovation is going on, employees can
either work at other Stop & Shop stores or take time off.
Several
employees will be kept on at the Arlington store during the renovation.
He said most employees are taking time off. The food, meanwhile, will
be transferred to other stores.
While the renovation date isn’t definite, Kalenoski said customers
will be given plenty of notice. When the work is done, a grand opening
will take place.
Kalenoski said he has been with the Arlington store for 5½ years
and has been seeking a renovation for much of that time. “It’ll be one
of a kind,” he said. “People won’t recognize it.”
In 1995, an effort to build a super Stop & Shop was defeated in a public referendum.
