Arlington is participating in a yearlong contest with Medford and Cambridge, called the Energy Smackdown, to see which community can reduce its energy use (and carbon emissions) by the greatest percentage. The competition includes several communitywide "challenge events," and Sunday, June 22, was the first one -- the Smart Transit Challenge.
Think of it as a cross between "The Amazing Race" and low-carbon
transportation -- instead of a race against the clock, the goal is to
reach several checkpoints by emitting the least amount of carbon
dioxide possible. A description of the challenge can be found below.
One of the keys to beating Medford and Cambridge is to get as many
people as possible to sign up and turn out to participate. It should be
fun for the whole family, and Team Arlington's strategy is to complete
most of the course by bicycle (a bicycle-friendly route has already
been mapped out in detail).
The course should take two to three hours to complete.
If you are interested in participating, you need to register at www.energysmackdown.com.
You need to receive an invitation to join from
an existing team member, so please send an e-mail request to one of our
two team captains or any of the other Team members (if you know one).
Arlington's team captains are Laurel Kayne (
