The Arlington Police Department did not make as much as it did last
year through an online auction in June, but they will take it. The
auction of abandoned property, using PropertyRoom.com,
yielded $190.80 to the town's general fund, mostly through the sale of
bicycles. Last year's auction brought in $4,000, primarily because of
two drug-forfeiture cars.
Lt. Robert Bongiorno of the
Arlington Police Department wrote in an e-mail July 17:
"Although the amount raised is smaller than last year, I have included
figures that the department has spent or would spend to run the
auction. As you can see, this is a very time-consuming and expensive
venture for the police department with minimal return. Since
outsourcing the auction to propertyroom.com, we have saved the
department and town considerable resources."
His e-mail notes the following:
Support/staff overtime to run the auction, $980.
Regular staff hours to prepare for the auction, $1302.44
Cost of auctioneer, up to $500 if a percentage of the gross is less than a agreed upon
amount.
Miscellaneous costs/disposal etc.: varies on what sells and what items need to be disposed.
