Two Democratic candidates for the Fourth
Middlesex Senate seat have issued statements in response to
fast-moving, shocking events that have reshaped the race. In a related matter, the name of J. James Marzilli Jr. will remain on the September primary ballot. Republican Brion Cangiamila is mounting a write-in bid, The Boston Globe reported. Cangiamila told YourArlington in an e-mail June 20:
"I'm running for the Senate seat this fall via a write-in campaign. Due to family concerns, my campaign got off to a late start, and we fell short of
the required signatures by approximately 12 signatures.
 Cangiamila
"I ran a successful
sticker campaign in 1994 for the same seat and plan to do it again.
"As for what the senator is dealing with personally or legally, that is
between the courts, his family, and alleged victims. I wish Senator
Marzilli and his family the very best and hope that he will do what is
right for the district, the Senate and the Commonwealth."
Asked by YourArlington to comment now that Marzilli has chosen not to seek reelection, Ken Donnelly
of Arlington, a firefighter's union officer, wrote in an e-mail June 5:
"I was deeply saddened to hear the news of Senator Marzilli’s legal problems.
"Senator Marzilli has been a longtime champion of issues important to the Arlington community. My thoughts and prayers are with the senator, his wife, Susan, his family/friends and the community during this difficult time.
"I hope that all of the parties involved will be able to receive the type of support and services needed to make it through this difficult time."
The other Democratic candidate, Jack Hurd, an Arlington selectman since 1997, was also asked June 5 to comment, and he responded June 10, apologizing for the delay:
“My thoughts are with all those affected by this very difficult
situation.
"I hope recovery and healing can occur as quickly as
possible. These events are out of character for Jim Marzilli, and I
respect his decision not to run for reelection and to seek professional
help.”
The two are vying for the seat that Marzilli has held since December -- and continues to hold. The primary is in September. No Republican is on the ballot.
Donnelly plans to officially
announce his candidacy for the State Senate on Thursday, June 19, at
7:30 p.m. at the Arlington Sons of Italy Hall, 19 Prentiss Road.
As for the ballot, Brian McNiff, a press officer for Secretary of State William Glavin, said June 10, that Marzilli's name will remain on the ballot. It could not be removed, he said, because the deadline to do so had passed.
Meanwhile, YourArlington asked Aimee Coolidge, head of of the Arlington Town Democratic Committee, how the group would respond in the light of Marzilli'sdropping out. In an e-mail June 9, she wrote:
"Typically, the Arlington Democratic Committee does not endorse
candidates in a primary election.
"Individual committee members and
other Democratic activists in town may work on different campaigns but
then come together once a nominee is chosen and together work for that
Democratic candidate. I expect that will continue.
"Should a
candidate wish to mount a write-in campaign, that is his or her
decision and individual committee members may or may not chose to be
part of that effort."
