Little FoxNew shop at East Arlington branch OPENS

The PTO Thrift Shop, which has provided more than $120,000 for the Arlington public schools since opening in 2004 at the Fox Library in East Arlington, is set to close this month. In its place comes the Little Fox, a resale shop that has been accepting donations since early May and opened June 11 with a party. Proceeds from the new shop will aid the Fox.

March 6: Thrift shop faces closing

Welcoming the public to the shop were the Friends of the Fox and public officials from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 11.

Susan Dorsen, one of the organizers of Little Fox, says that the shop needs volunteers and is accepting donations in the rear of the Fox Library from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesdays or by appointment. Donations are tax-deductible.

Dorsen and co-organizer Amy Weitzman announced May 8 that, in order to open, they needed of gently used children's clothes, books, movies, toys, shoes, games, sports equipment, and infant supplies and gear. "We also need shelving and kid-themed decorations such as clocks, posters, lamps (floor and desk), wall art, etc.," Dorsen wrote.

Starting June 18, the new shop is expected to open every Wednesday at hours yet to be determined. In the fall, the organizers hope to be open Wednesdays 1 to 8 p.m.

They provide the following donation guidelines:

"We will not be able to sell clothing that is ripped, stained or missing buttons. Toys and games must work and have all their pieces. Infant supplies and gear must meet current safety requirements.

"Please, no adult clothing or housewares. If you bring us things we can not use, it creates more work for us and we are all volunteers so please think carefully about what you donate to us.

In addition, they wrote, "volunteers will also be a crucial part of our store so if you have time to help (even just a couple of hours a month) please contact us and we will e-mail you when we are ready for help."

Mora Rothenberg wrote to the Arlington May 29 that "shopkeepers at the PTO Thrift Shop want everyone to know that the store is jam-packed this week. Several hundred new items have been added to the racks and shelves, and lots more will be added in the coming weeks as shopkeepers work through the remaining back-log of donations.

"Before closing in mid-June, the shop will be open Wednesdays 4 to 8 p.m., Thursdays 9:30 to 1, and Saturday, June 14, 12:30 to 5 p.m. The store is in the lower level of the Fox Branch Library, 175 Mass Ave (entrance on Cleveland Street).

June 11 party HONORS THRIFT SHOP LEADERS

The Friends of the Fox Library held an evening of fun at the Fox library on Wednesday, June 11, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Town officials and Friends of the Fox honored Sara Billingsley, Judy Hoer, Mary Ellen De Natale, and all the volunteers who have run the PTO Thrift Shop for more than four years. The PTO Thrift Shop will be closing in mid-June.

The Friends of the welcomed Dorson andWeitzman, who are running the Little Fox, a children’s resale shop in a new location, upstairs in the Fox Library building.

There were artwork displayed, refreshments, and raffle prizes — including family passes to the Arlington reservoir.
