Broadway Plaza planting, May 17, 2008
Volunteers arrange plantings at plaza planting on May 17.
Broadway Plaza looks much more like spring after about 40 volunteers helped spruce it up on May 17. Barbara Popolow and Nancie Richardson have updated the public:

A big thank you from the Friends of Broadway Plaza to:

  • The great group of volunteers who showed up with tools and smiles;
  • Town employees and officials who cleared the planters and other hurdles, and turned on the water;
  •  Arlington Center businesses, the Arlington Garden Club, and
  • Arlington residents who raised and donated money for the plants and for maintenance, and who planned and coordinated the planting day;
  • The Chamber for jump-starting the effort in the first place;
  • The many people who stopped by to say how much they loved the changes!

We hope everyone enjoys the new plantings

Kathy Keady, owner of La Ladybug Boutique, was instrumental in getting the volunteers there. She and Melissa MacDonald coordinated the day.

Other key planners were Randy Buck, Watertown Savings; Selectman Clarissa Rowe, Ruth Yannett of the town DPW,  Nanci Richardson of the Arlington Garden Club, Michele Meagher of the Chamber of Commerce and other town employees.

Richardson wrote:

We had about 40 people there yesterday.- young kids to senior citizens. Great fun and great people.

The Garden Cub is thrilled that this has happened.

We tried to adopt a BP planter last year, but our fiunding fell through. So we quickly applied for a grant through the Garden Club Federation of Massachusetts, the state garden organization, and received a $500 grant back in October 2007.

Chamber of Commerce logo When Chamber folks started talking about BP this past February/March, we just all got together and started planning the entire Plaza area. A great community handshake!
