An Arlington man said he would kill his 6-month-old son, shoot five people and then commit suicide, a prosecutor said in court May 1, according to The Boston Globe. Michael Whalen, 42, pleaded not guilty in Cambridge District Court to charges that included parental kidnapping.
The Arlington Police Department reported April 30 that the Amber
Alert for 6-month-old Lucas Whalen of Arlington was canceled at about
7:30. The baby was brought to the Arlington police station and appeared
to be in good health. Chief Fred Ryan announced the news at Town
Meeting about 8:05 p.m.
The baby was then taken to Winchester Hospital for routine examination. The infant is reported to be under the care of an aunt in Winchester.
Arlington police cooperated in the investigation.
Earlier, State Police had issued an Amber Alert on the afternoon of April 30 for
the 6-month-old.
He was then believed to be with his parents, Michael Whalen and Danielle
Marie Boyle of Arlington, police said. Police said they may have been traveling in a
dark gray 2007 Ford 500 with Massachusetts plate 49RF83.
Michael Whelan, the possible operator of that vehicle, may be armed, Arlington police said in an earlier press release.
Sources said earlier that Whalen could harm to his baby and himself, Arlington police said.
The father became distraught after
hearing that his son’s custody was going to be taken from him, police said. About 4 p.m. April 30, State Police activated the
Amber Alert system to help locate the infant.
The public has been asked
to immediately call 911 if they observe the vehicle. Police ask the public not to approach
the vehicle.
Helicopters whirred over Arlington between 4 and 6 p.m. that day.
Police provided these descriptions at the time:
Michael T. Whalen is a white, male, 5-feet-9 with a skinny build, and tattoos on both arms.
He is believed to be accompanied by the baby’s mother, Danielle Marie Boyle. Ms. Boyle, 24, also of Arlington, is described as a white, female, 5-feet-5.
Lucas weighs
about 25 to 30 pounds and has hazel eyes and very little hair.
The vehicle has been reported stolen to the Stoneham Police Department. The vehicle may be destined for the North Shore of Boston/ Southern New Hampshire area.
