Town Seal logoKey aim is to avoid sidewalk parking

About 100 residents heard an update April 17 at the Peirce School from town officials about plans to improve Forest Street and Park Avenue Extension. Town Engineer Michael W. Rademacher provided the following summary.

Current plans are conceptual and are expected to change based on input from abutters. Final plans are expected to be drawn up this summer. If completed by then, the public can expect construction to begin next fall and take two to three months to complete.

"The schedule depends heavily on how difficult it will be to incorporate the requests and concerns of all abutters," Rademacher said. "If the design process goes longer than expected, and construction cannot be completed this year, the DPW would strongly consider putting a full layer of pavement over the road surface to avoid having to go through another winter with the roadway in the condition it is now."

Plans calls for a full rebuild of Forest Street from Park Avenue Extension to Winchester. The current surface will be ground up and used as part of the new base.

Park Avenue Extension to Summer Street expects to get about an inch and a half of new asphalt.

Forest from Summer Street to Park Avenue Extension expects to get one or two new concrete sidewalks with granite curbs. Walks will range from 4 to 5 feet wide.

Forest from Park Avenue Extension to Winchester will have one new concrete sidewalk with granite curbing. The final configuration of this walk has not been determined.  The hilly terrain and the possible issuance of some overnight parking permits will influence its location. If the walk does need to shift sides along the roadway, it is likely that a crosswalk will be located at the Thomas Street intersection to accommodate the shift.

As to parking, the projects aim is to change the neighborhood to discourage cars on sidewalks. Engineering will be working on figuring out ways to avoid sidewalk parking.
