Town sealArlington resident Juliana deHaan Rice, managing attorney in the administrative law division of the state attorney general's office has been appointed to serve as town counsel, as longtime counsel John Maher is retiring. "John will be retiring May 23. She will start no later than when John leaves," Town Manager Brian Sullivan said. "I would like to have a little overlap, but that depends on finances." The new counsel's annual salary will be $112,500.

Rice is to start in the post at the end of May. Maher has served the town as counsel for more than 30 years.

The town counsel serves as chief legal officer of the town.

Rice was selected from a pool of 40 who applied to the position. Members of the  selection team were attorney Steve DeCourcey, Finance Committee; Jen Dopazo, Brookline town counsel; attorney Phil McCarthy, former Town Meeting member and chair of the Cable Advisory Committee; Judge Rudolph Kass of Arlington; Caryn Malloy, director of personnel; Marie Krepelka, board  administer for the Board of Selectmen; and Maher.

The team unanimously recommended the selection of Rice to Sullivan. “I was extremely impressed by Ms. Rice’s qualifications,” Sullivan said. “She has extensive experience in governmental law as both litigator and supervisor of other attorneys. She is highly regarded by her colleagues. "I am confident that Ms. Rice will provide the highest quality of legal services to Arlington, and I'm pleased she has accepted the appointment.” Ms. Rice has worked for the attorney general's office for more than 10 years, was an associate at Smith & Duggan and holds a B.A. cum laude from Brandeis, J.D. cum laude from Boston College Law School and holds several bar admissions.

Rice lives in town with her husband and daughter.

She will observe Town Meeting, as time warrants, and begin her appointment upon Maher’s retirement.
