Who will lead the School Committee in April? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bob Sprague
Wednesday, 12 March 2008
School Committee logoWith the two top School Committee members not seeking reelection, who might be in charge after the April Town Election? Those who have declared an interest for committee chairman or vice chairman are Joseph Curran, Denise Burns and Ron Spangler.

Susan Lovelace, the current chair, and Vice Chairman Sean Garballey are not seeking reelection to the School Committee.

In a March 12 e-mail to media outlets, including YourArlington, Lovelace wrote:

"Since members of the community have been approaching School Committee members with questions regarding the process for leadership succession on the Committee after the April election, I have provided the information below." It is an e-mail to the members of the School Committee:

"Since both the current Chair and Vice Chair of the Committee are completing their terms and are not running for re-election, questions have been raised regarding the leadership succession process for the next Committee.  After the election on April 5, 2008, the Committee will convene for an Organizational meeting at 7:00 p.m. on April 8, 2008., where Mr. Thielman will preside as Chairman pro tempore following Robert's Rules of Order until the new officers are elected.

"The office of Chair and Vice-Chair will go to the senior member who has not held the office and declares interest approximately one month prior to the Annual Town Election by informing the Chair or the Administrative Secretary.

"The election of the officers will follow the guidelines outlined in Policy BDAA below:

"For the purpose of defining seniority of school committee members under File BDA and File BDAA, the following rule shall apply.  When two or more members are elected for the first time at the same election, and when both members have had identical lengths of service on the committee the senior member shall be determined by the member receiving the greater number of votes received in the election in which the members were first elected.

"In order of seniority, the following members have already declared interest in serving as Chair or Vice Chair of the Committee:

"Mr. Curran*
"Ms. Burns
"Mr. Spangler

"Thus, if Mr. Curran is re-elected on April 5th, he will serve as Chair and Ms. Burns will serve as Vice Chair. If Mr. Curran is not re-elected, Ms. Burns will serve as Chair and Mr. Spangler will serve as Vice Chair.

"*NOTE: Although Mr. Curran ran without opposition on a separate ballot for a one-year term and therefore was not running in opposition to Ms. Burns or Mr. Spangler, our policies do not have an accommodation for such a circumstance and according to the Town Counsel, the provision on the most votes remains operative.

"If you have been asked questions regarding this process please feel free to share the above information or have people contact me directly [at This email address is being protected from spam bots, you need Javascript enabled to view it ]."
