Arlington High School girls lost to undefeated St. Mary's, 7-1, in the state hockey tournament at Salem State on March 6. The squad had beaten Lexington, 2-0, in the quarterfinals March 1. Lexington (15-3-1) had been ranked No. 4. Wakefield topped Woburn, 3-2 in two overtimes in the other semifinal match.
A Globe listing March 2 rates St. Mary's No. 1 and Arlington at No. 5.
The Boston Herald reported March 2, under the headline "Arlington wins border war with Lexington":
"Kim Hayward made 29 saves for the shutout and fifth-seeded Arlington bumped off No. 4 Lexington, 2-0, in a Div. 1 quarterfinal.
"Twin sisters Emily and Kylee Sullivan had the goals for the Spy Ponders (16-2-4), who move on to face top-seeded St. Mary's in the semifinals Wednesday.
"The Spartans improved to 23-0-0 with their 7-3 victory over eighth-seeded Boston Latin."
The final is set for March 11 at Harvard University.
