Sean Garballey, Tim Murray
Sean Garballey with Lt. Gov. Timothy Murray on March 2.

Lt. Gov. Tim Murray, a Democrat, endorsed Sean Garballey for state representative today at the candidate's home, 45 Maynard St. Earlier, NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts endorsed Garballey, a Democrat who is seeking to become the state representative for Arlington and West Medford in the 23rd Middlesex district.

Murray attended a reception, where he greeted and enthusiastic crowd of well-wishers and reminded them of the importance of every single vote. He encouraged them all to get out and elect Garballey in the March 4 special election.

At the Jan. 24 candidates' night, Garballey supported a woman's right to choose, while Republican John Worden declined to take a position on the issue.

Kelly O’Bryan, political director for NARAL, wrote in an e-mail to Garballey Feb. 28:

"I am very pleased to inform you that  NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, the leading statewide organization working for reproductive freedom and the right to privacy, provides a range of assistance to endorsed candidates, including the use of our membership list in your district and a press release – available upon request.

"We will send you the NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts Talking About Choice packet, a guide for pro-choice candidates with information and message points about women’s reproductive health issues, along with a printed copy of your letter of endorsement.

"This election comes at a pivotal time for reproductive choice.  We face serious federal restrictions on women’s reproductive freedom, including the recent Supreme Court decision banning so-called 'partial-birth abortion,' and challenges to Roe vs. Wade at the state level.  Unfortunately, many states have laws on the books outlawing abortion that will go immediately into effect if Roe is over-turned.  Access to contraception, family planning services, and comprehensive sex education are also under attack.

"Because of increased federal restrictions, it is more important than ever that state legislators protect access to contraception and family planning services, promote comprehensive sex education and ensure access to safe and legal abortion."
