Manager recommends Jefferson as fire chief |

Town Manager Brian Sullivan has recommended that Robert Jefferson be appointed Arlington fire chief effective Feb. 9, the day after the retirement of former chief, Allan McEwen, took effect. Caryn Cove Molloy, town personnel director said there was no interview process after Sullivan choose the top candidate of three on the list.

Cove wrote in a Feb. 19 e-mail that Sullivan had "no intention of bypassing him [Jefferson] to get to Candidate #2 or #3."
The other finalists were Richard Weismann and Bernard Ryan.
Jefferson, an Arlington firefighter with 25 years of experience in town, including firefighters' union president, has been serving as interim chief since Jan. 1, when McEwen began vacation.
Jefferson has been asked to comment.
McEwen, 55, took over as fire chief in 2005. He announced his retirement in a Nov. 16 letter to Sullivan.
McEwen, who worked for the town of Arlington for 31 years, also resigned as director of emergency management for the town.
Jefferson has long been active member of the firefighters' union, including its president. As acting chief, he know fills a management role closing.
