U.S. Rep. Ed Markey endorses fellow Democrat Sean Garballey in Arlington on Feb. 24.
U.S. Rep. Ed Markey endorsed the candidacy of fellow Democrat Sean Garballey at a gathering Feb. 24 at Restaurante Olivio in Arlington. In a campaign update about the race for state representative in the 23rd Middlesex district published by InsideMedford, Citizens for Limited Taxation has endorsed independent candidate Robert Valeri.
The Arlington gathering for Garballey, vice chairman of the Arlington School Committee, included many prominent Democrats, including Town Meeting member Joe Daly, current selectmen Diane Mahon and Jack Hurd, as well as former selectman Charles Lyons.
Opposing Garballey in the March 4 general election are John L. Worden III, a Repoublican and former veteran Town Meeting moderator, and Valeri.
Markey stood with Garballey, 22, and spoke of knowing him for 10 years. The candidate had volunteered in Markey’s campaign when Garballey was a student at Ottoson.
Markey extolled Garballey’s support and awareness of the needs of working men and women, and ordinary folk from all walks of life.
Markey praised Garballey’s commitment to civil rights and caring for all members of the community. Markey praised the candidate’s insight and commitment to understanding and meeting the needs of the whole community.
Daly, a former state representative, reminisced about being elected to the State House the same year as Markey, when Ed was a 20-something student at Boston College.
Garballey spoke about the loss over the years in local aid to Arlington and Medford of about $40 million and the uphill struggle both communities are having as a result in maintaining their school buildings, school programs and infrastructure. He pledged himself to the uphill battle to restore those revenues as much as possible.
Garballey made clear how honored he felt that Markey had taken time out of his full schedule to support his campaign.
Garballey said he decided to run despite knowing that the time to campaign was short and that it would require a strong grass-roots effort to win because he loves this community so much, and wants to serve his community and work to make Arlington and West Medford the best they can be for all their residents.
