Arlington police Wednesday night arrested a knife-wielding man who attempted to rob the Broadway Market at 94 Broadway. Police said they charged Darren J. Splaine, 42, of Somerville, after the 8:19 incident. In a news release issued Feb. 14, police said that while the suspect was demanding cash from the cashier, another store employee saw this and chased the suspect out of the store with a baseball bat.
Police said they arrived immediately thereafter and set up a containment of the area. After a short search, Arlington canine officer Michael Hogan located the suspect on Oxford Street.
Police said the still-armed suspect refused to comply with the officer’s request to submit to his authority. The suspect then assaulted the officer, police said.
Hogan and his canine, Dasty, were finally able to take the suspect to the ground, police said.
Other officers came to Hogan’s assistance, and they succeeded in disarming and handcuffing the suspect.
Splaine was charged with armed robbery while masked, two counts of assault by means dangerous weapon, a knife, and resisting arrest.
It is not known whether this incident is related to recent break-in attempts along Broadway.
