Cita asks: Is my license a town fraud? PDF Print E-mail
Written by Carmencita

A curious WAG investigates

I'm Carmencita, a small brown Arlington mutt with boundless curiosity. My beagle-Corgi tail curls back toward my head like a question mark. I'm just walking curiosity. I've been that way ever since I was born in Puerto Rico and came to live in Arlington in 2004, when the Sprague-Howard family adopted me.

I like to sniff at everything, and sniffing raises questions. Here's the latest: Is the license I wear on the collar around my neck an example of faud?

Someone writing on the Arlington e-mail list this summer thinks so. My owner told me, in paraphrase, what he wrote:

Arlington taxpayers are paying the town so they can supply them with information the town already has -- for example, when your dog gets a rabies vaccine, that information is sent to the clerk's office, and when you register your dog at the clerk's office, you give them the same information.

Yip, yip, yip! That news gave me barking fit.

6 of 7 members explain vote on legal update; Curran declines PDF Print E-mail
Written by Bob Sprague

School Committee logoDid a majority of the School Committee on July 24 try to restrict information about the arbitration costs involving a fired Ottoson teacher, as The Advocate has reported? Or was there "no compelling reason" for excluding the public from the update and a fear of leaked information, as committee member Ron Spangler says? In an attempt to provide answers to these questions, YourArlington asked committee members to explain their votes on Spangler's motion to remove a closed-session agenda item. Here is what those who responded wrote or, in one case, how one responded in another forum.

Moonbat design by Tony Vogel
Don't tread on me, some in Arlington SAY, and a community effort gets off ground

This is a story about moonbats -- creatures pushed into the dark side who are trying to find the light in Arlington. Do our town creatures succeed? You decide.

Moonbats are imaginary, but they are no less real. The possibility of bats living on the Earth's moon dates at least to 1835, when what may have been America's first tabloid newspaper, the New York Sun, published a story with a picture purportedly showing the creatures on our nightly satellite. The hoax sold many papers.

The trial of J. James Marzilli Jr. has been set for next April, a time when he will no longer be a state senator, according to dates agreed to today in Lowell Superior Court. At trial, Marzilli faces charges of accosting four women in Lowell on June 3, accusations that led to his declining to run for reelection. On June 5, he was admitted to McLean Hospital, where he has been treated for bipolar disorder.

Outside the courthouse, Marzilli, 50, and his wife, Susan Shaer, came to the aid of a 14-year-old boy who had been seriously injured after he had been struck by a minivan. The Lowell Sun reported that the unidentified teen was struck while riding his bicycle with a friend, who was on another bike, on Gorham near Elm Street in Lowell about 2:45 p.m.

'Much Ado' at ACA on July 27, 2008
'Much Ado About Nothing' comes off in a dry way at ACA on July 27.
The Arlington Center for the Arts presented the New England Shakespeare Company's version of the Bard's comedy "Much Ado About Nothing" on Sunday, July 27. Because of expected inclement weather, the play was performed inside at 41 Foster St., not in Menotomy Rocks Park, as had been planned. Linda Shoemaker of the ACA comments and refers to photos from the play >>

Arlington's Stop & Shop, whose market areas had been closed since July 6, reopened Sunday, July 27, with a brighter appearance and wider aisles. When you first walk in from the Highland Avenue end of the building, you will see wider access. Spiffier signs point the way for shoppers. The customer-service desk is now called the Solution Center. Public comments following the opening have reflected a largely underwhelming response to the changes. What do you think? Let the public know by clicking on the comment link below (use your full name when commenting).
