Dr. Jane Goodall visited New England Roots & Shoots groups on Friday, May 9, at the Mass. Audubon’s Boston Nature Center in Mattapan. Two groups from Arlington, Planet Ottoson and the Bishop Green Bees, met the famed primatologist, asked questions, and shared their work with her and with other Roots & Shoots groups. [more]

Drug abuse logoThe fiscal 2009 House budget includes $100,000 for the Arlington Youth Health and Safety Coalition (AYHSC), three Arlington state representatives have announced. Representatives William Brownsberger, Sean Garballey and Jay Kaufman said their joint amendment was adopted May 7.

New School Committee member Joe Curro and his daughter join a dance at the Senior Center on May 3.
The fourth annual visit of students from Arlington's Japanese sister city, Nagaokakyo, came to a close May 4, as 16 middle-schoolers and three teachers returned to Japan. Here is a diary, in pictures and words, about their visit:

4th Middlesex logoThree Arlington Democratic candidates for the Fourth Middlesex Senate District will be eligible for the primary, based on the number of signatures certified by the town clerk’s office. Democrats Jack Hurd, Jim Marzilli and Ken Donnelly, gathered more than the 300 required signatures in Arlington alone. Republican candidate and Billerica resident Brion Cangiamila also took out papers to run for the seat Marzilli has held since his special election victory last December. Cangiamila lost to Marzilli in that election.

Symmes 360 logoAs blasting at the former Symmes site was expected the week of April 28 and the town has warned residents, the head of a neighborhood group says "Symmes neighbors have been very well informed." Michele A. Barry, head of the Symmes Neighborhood Advisory Committee (SNAC), says the company involved went "well beyond their legal obligation." Signs saying "blasting today" were posted April 29 at Hospital Road.

The Arlington rock band Spare Change was one of five bands performing at the Center of the Arts in Natick on Sunday, April 27, as finalists in a Rock Showdown, an eastern Massachusetts high school Battle of the Bands. The performances were judged by Berklee College of Music faculty.

APD logoArlington police are investigating what a witness called an armed robbery at Leader Bank, 141 Mass. Ave., about 11:15 a.m. today. Police said a teller was handed a note demanding money and saying the man had a concealed weapon. The teller handed the suspect a bundle of money.  A police press release did not include an estimate of the amount.
