The Arlington Police Department was honored at the annual American Automobile Association (AAA) Southern New England awards luncheon Nov. 18. The department was recognized for its success in pedestrian safety and the department's continuing effort to educate and protect the citizens of our community.
The town of Arlington has had no pedestrian fatality in more than five years, a police news release said.
Police Chief Frederick Ryan said, "The Arlington Police Department would like to thank our
citizens, Town and elected officials, and the Transportation Advisory Committee for their support in this effort. Working together, we have made Arlington a safer place to live."

Arlington police provide YourArlington with reports of recent police
responses in Arlington. Reports for Nov. 8 through 16 include
information about a robbery and a number of arrests. Reporter Colin
Campbell receives the log from the office
of Chief Fred Ryan and writes about selected items.
On Saturday, Nov. 15, at 2:05 a.m., Patrolmen David Martin, Stephen
Wilkins, Jen McGurl and James Kiernan, along with Sgt. Sean Kiernan
responded to a vacant home on Memorial Way after receiving a report of
a disturbance at that location. The call resulted in the arrests of
Edwin Grossett, 25, and Wilfredo Velasquez, 27, both of Somerville, and Tanika Harris-Charles, 30, of Arlington.

An Arlington real estate agent, Adam Rosenbaum, provides an update about homes for sale in town that have gone under agreement, the asking price for each and how many days on the market. The following are his comments.
As an Arlington realtor and long time resident, I’m always surprised
just how much interest there is when I’m talking with people about real
estate. It doesn’t seem to matter if they are “in the market” or not.

Arlington's Central Fire Station in 1926, an era to which the horn hearkens. Silence on Veterans Day, but who noticed?
Some Arlington residents may have noticed a moment of unexpected quiet on Veterans Day, when the town horn failed to make its traditional 11-blast salute at 11:11 a.m.that day.
According to Fire Chief Robert Jefferson, the Fire Department was
unaware there was a problem with the horn until they attempted to sound
it on Tuesday, Nov. 11. Since then, the department has discovered a problem
in one of the relays that operates the horn.
When the horn failed to sound on Veterans Day, firefighters quickly carried out a large fire bell, which was sounded eleven times at the official ceremony.
“If that is the only problem, it is a fairly easy and inexpensive fix,”
Jefferson explained in an e-mail. “We’ll see how we make out this week and the
horn should be working again.”
According to the town Web site, the horn sounds at noon and 6:45 p.m.
every day and is also used to notify residents of school closings,
weather emergencies, and other emergencies. It is also sounded on civic
occasions, such as Veterans Day or firefighter funerals.

The Arlington Redevelopment Board on Nov. 17 disagreed with some aspects of a plan to establish a CBS drugstore at the former Hodgdon-Noyes automobile dealership next to Arlington High School, Wickedlocal has reported.
The Web site, which publishes stories that will be in The Advocate, reported that CVS representatives presented a model with a single store surrounded by ample
parking, a drive-through pharmacy, and a lane similar to the
one in front of Stop & Shop. The Redevelopment Board suggested adding another business to the lot and
preserving the Dr. Atwood House on adjoining property. CVS wants to move or tear down the home to make
room for an ATM, the Web site reported.

The Ottoson Middle School is 50 students shy of capacity, Interim Superintendent Kathleen Bodie has told the School Committee. “We’re pushing at the seams,” said Bodie of Ottoson, pointing out that some classes are being held in windowless storage rooms.
Bodie discussed the crowding at Ottoson during a presentation to the School Committee on space issues on Oct. 28. Rising enrollment has sparked concerns that the schools will run out of classrooms in the next few years, and is also complicating the planning for a proposed expansion of special education programs.
