Finance logoOn March 20, the state Senate approved House Bill 4595, a resolution previously approved by the House, concerning the three major local-aid accounts. This resolution represents a legislative agreement as to the amounts of Chapter 70, Additional Assistance and Lottery aid to be paid to municipalities and regional school districts in FY09. Amounts for Arlington and some of its neighbors are shown below.

Five candidates vying for three seats on the School Committee in the April 5 election gave voters a snapshot of their ideas about school rebuilding and other issues to 50 people March 17 at Stratton in an event sponsored by the school's PTO. At 6 p.m., 22 people were present in the Stratton auditorium, with its pride banner above the candidates and its huge international quilt on the back wall. Later, the numbers swelled to about 50.

"The establishment permit for Healthcare Massage located at 800 Mass. Ave. has been revoked and all practitioner permits associated with that establishment have been suspended," Christine Connelly, town health director, wrote in an e-mail March 16. "In order to practice massage in Arlington a practitioner must be associated with a permitted massage therapy establishment."

School budgetWith division hidden behind the realities of educational underfunding, the School Committee took less an hour March 11 to agree to add back teaching positions while raising a variety of fees in supporting the fiscal 2009 budget $37.8 million. The agreement was not unanimous, as the 5-2 vote shows, with Denise Burns and Joe Curran opposed.
