The excitement was palpable at the Bishop School recently as children
"became" words. Clap, clap, clapclapclap! Steven Carme, the school's
principal, led children in rhythmic clapping to hush excited students
assembled in the auditorium. Everyone fell into the beat. Inspired by
events in the children's book, Miss Alaineus by Debra Fraser, library
teacher Amy Kremer launched the Bishop's first Vocabulary Parade, on
May 8, to celebrate events in a book read by second- and fifth-grade
library classes and to stimulate word knowledge and fun.
Arlington police are investigating another bank robbery, this one Tuesday, May 13, at Brookline Savings in which an undetermined amount of cash was taken. Chief Fred Ryan said police are seeking a white male, 5-feet-8 to 6 feet tall with a medium build and beard in his 20s. The man walked into the bank at 856 Mass. Ave., across from Arlington High School, about 1:43 p.m. and passed a note demanding cash.
The Middlesex District Attorney's Office said May 13 that, after an investigation, it did not have enough evidence to prove criminal charges beyond a reasonable doubt in an accusation brought against Sen. J. James Marzilli. The senator's lawyer said that his client "got the decision he expected, that he is innocent."
The Arlington public schools have spent $236,831 in legal fees from
last June 1 to April 30. Of that total, the amount paid to defend the
schools in cases involving a dismissed principal and teacher adds up to
$185,633, according to numbers provided by Superintendent Nate Levenson
after YourArlington requested them.
Dr. Jane Goodall visited New England Roots & Shoots groups on Friday, May 9, at the Mass. Audubon’s Boston Nature Center in Mattapan. Two groups from Arlington, Planet Ottoson and the Bishop Green Bees, met the famed primatologist, asked questions, and shared their work with her and with other Roots & Shoots groups. [more]
The fiscal 2009 House budget includes $100,000 for the Arlington Youth Health and Safety Coalition (AYHSC), three Arlington state representatives have announced. Representatives William Brownsberger, Sean Garballey and Jay Kaufman said their joint amendment was adopted May 7.
