At the March 27 Candidates' Night, School Committee member Joseph Curran said he estimated legal expenses driven by the Coughlin-Bouris case were "close to $300,000." But the latest figures for legal fees appear to show that Curran's estimate is too high. The amount spent for such fees through February -- the latest figures available -- show a total of $212,775 spent for all legal work. The amount related to the Coughlin-Bouris case is most of that total, or $206,060.

If you’ve been to Menotomy Rocks Park with a bike or stroller lately, you’ve likely noted the new, smoother pathways, observed new native-species plantings, or thrown a stick for Fido to fetch out of the clean pond. Perhaps you’ve enjoyed Shakespeare in the Park at Menotomy or played with your kids on the playground installed by the Friends of Menotomy in 1996. Perhaps your child has attended a school field trip or a nature class at this beautiful natural park -- or perhaps you’ve attended an event like Earth Day, or the upcoming Menotomy Rocks Park grand reopening celebration (to be announced soon).

As seniors at Arlington High School, electives are essentially our only choice for a history class. Some electives cover world history, American law, and racial issues. And then there’s Symposium, a class in which both juniors and seniors research current events and issues, nationwide and worldwide, and frequently debate potential solutions to issues or discuss how worldwide issues can affect us. With the spirit of college basketball’s March Madness tournament upon us, Jerry Pei, the Symposium teacher, decided to have a tournament of debates ranging from serious to social issues. Only one student could be crowned the champion.
This story was written by Eric Stele, a senior at Arlington High School.

No 'legal impediment' to E-MAILS, lawyer says
A lawsuit brought last August by a former Ottoson principal and teacher naming the Arlington public schools has concluded with Arlington prevailing, an attorney for the schools has written. In addition, e-mails requested last July in the case involving Stavroula Bouris, the former principal, and former teacher Chuck Coughlin, could be made available to the public. In a letter provided to the School Committee, Kay H. Hodge, an attorney for Stoneman, Chandler & Miller, wrote that "there is no legal impediment" to the schools producing the e-mails in question.
