The Arlington public school administration has dropped its opposition to the appeal brought by former Ottoson teacher Chuck Coughlin, who was seeking unemployment benefits. An e-mail from Superintendent Nate Levenson provided to YourArlington by School Committee Chairwoman Susan Lovelace today cites the cost of continuing the case as the reason for withdrawing. Levenson's Jan. 16 e-mail to the School Committee, to attorneys representing the committee and to town officials, says:

Recurring thefts at Robbins in recent years have led the library administration to monitor patrons as police issue cautions. Shortly before a security camera was installed in December, an Arlington High School student lost her backpack on the library's second floor and later found it under a desk. It appeared the thief wanted only money, but the backpack contained none.
The author and photographer is a senior at Arlington High School.

Church serves up change near Arlington Town Hall
A block with businesses long familiar to Arlington residents is being transformed as a new face in town undergoes some changes of its own. Three businesses across from Town Hall have closed within a short time span to make way for the expansion of the Highrock church, which has seen its attendance increase dramatically. On Dec. 29 the Town Hall restaurant served its last breakfast in its tiny space at 735 Mass. Ave. “It’s very sad,” said Donna Stathoulopoulos. She and her husband, John, had operated the eatery since September 1986, and the site had been the home of other restaurants long before the Stathoulopoulos family took over. “Families grew up here,” she said.

Arlington police say they have been busy, too, issuing warnings -- "dozens," wrote Capt. John Serson in an e-mail Dec. 27 in response to a request from YourArlington about how police have handled snow-shoveling issues. The officer declined to be more specific. In response, most apparently complied. Six did not and were fined.
