A 30-year-old Arlington man was charged with attempted murder and aggravated assault Sunday, Feb. 17, after an early morning argument with his girlfriend at Newland Road.

Arlington police charged Gregg Perry, who they said appeared to be extremely intoxicated, after the girlfriend alleged Perry pushed her to the floor, put his hands around her throat and strangled her.

Police said Perry's son, nearly 3, was staying the night at the house, and was upset and was crying.

The police report says: "Upon further investigation the residence was in complete disarray." The investigating officers observed numerous beer cans, wine bottles, alcohol bottles, old food, clothes, shoes, hypodermic needles and blankets scattered around the house.

The report provides this narrative:

About 2:10 a.m. Patrolman Neil Simard was dispatched to the Newland Road address with two other officers to investigate an argument in the street.

The victim said Perry put his hands around her throat and strangled her. Police observed red marks around her neck. She also appeared to be intoxicated, police said.

She said that after drinking alcohol for a few hours, they got into an argument. She said that when she told Perry she was leaving, he got upset. The woman said she feared for her life and had to forcefully remove Perry's hands from her neck.

She said this is an ongoing occurrence and that when Perry drinks alcohol, he becomes physically abusive.

Police saw numerous cuts and bruises on the woman. Arlington Rescue transported her to Lahey Burlington for medical treatment.

Police tried to contact the boy's mother, but were unable to do so. A grandmother agreed to take custody of him for the night.

Police also contacted the state Department of Children & Families, where a supervisor gave permission for the boy to be turned over to his grandmother.

They suggested the town Board of Health be alerted to the condition of the home.
