Weatherization assistance group launched

A group of people who were involved in the Energy Smackdown in Arlington have formed a new weatherization assistance group called A-HEET, or Arlington Home Energy Efficiency Team. The group is an offshoot of the popular and effective Cambridge HEET and are operating with their generous assistance.

A-HEET works with homeowners to weatherize their homes in order to reduce energy consumption, save them money and teach volunteers how to do the work themselves. A typical event might include weatherizing doors and windows, sealing all exterior penetrations, wrapping hot water pipes, installing low-flow faucet aerators, etc.

The labor is all volunteer, and the homeowner pays for materials and food (or for low-income families, they try to get materials donated). A-HEET doesn’t install boilers or hot water heaters or blow in insulation — it tackles the "low-hanging fruit"; that is, the simpler, less technical things that make homes more efficient.

A-HEET’s first event was held Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

A-HEET will be weatherizing a two-family home run by the Housing Corporation of Arlington. This project will be mostly sealing exterior penetrations with expanding foam, caulking some interior locations, installing foam seals in electrical outlets and wrapping hot water pipes.

A-HEET is also looking for donations of tools – asking people to please check your basement for tools that may be gathering dust and won't likely be used again.

If you have any of the items noted below, let us know, and Marin will pick them up.

A-HEET is an unofficial nonprofit organization, meaning it does not have 501(c)(3) status. Any donations you make will be out of the kindness of your heart but not eligible for tax-deduction purposes.

Tools needed:

Caulking guns
Utility knives/razors
Utility knife/razor blades
Screwdrivers (Phillips and flat head)
Nails, size 4d
Hammers
Goggles/eye protection
Nail punches
Wrenches
Extension cords (heavy duty type, not household type)
Tape measures

If you have any of the above you’d be willing to donate please email Jeremy Marin at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

To volunteer at the event OR join the A-HEET mailing list, please e-mail Laurel Kayne at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .
