| Hearing for Center cycling, safety plan held Jan. 10 |
|
The Town of Arlington has received a commitment of funding for $290,000 to improve safety at Mass. Ave. and Route 60 for all travelers including, pedestrians, cyclists and drivers. The funding allows the town to look at long-term safety solutions for this heavily traveled area. A public meeting to solicit feedback was held Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 7 to 9 p.m. at Town Hall Auditorium. Word on the Street has more details>> Additional project information, including the presentation to the Board of Selectmen, can be found at arlingtonma.gov/dpwprojects. A major challenge is the gap in the Minuteman Bikeway between Swan Place and Route 60 which results in some cyclists riding on the sidewalk. Short-term measures were taken last summer, which included new signs and increased enforcement. One proposal would establish a diagonal bike lane at the intersection. Eastbound cyclists now must dismount at Mystic Street, walk to crosswalks at the major town intersection and resume the path just past Jam N' Java. The town has hired consultant Howard/Stein-Hudson Associates Inc. of Boston. |
