What is ZaRex?  What was Menotomy Rocks Park's original, more ominous name?

More than 20 teams representing schools and community groups -- and even elected officials -- will answer trivia questions like these at the Arlington Education Foundation's annual Trivia Bee to be held Sunday, March 24, at 3 p.m. at Town Hall.

For over 10 years, participants have donned creative hats, and sometimes costumes, while competing for good fun, great prizes and the chance to be named the Trivia Bee Champions.  The Grand Prize is books donated to the Arlington school library of the winning team’s choice.  The 2012 Trivia Bee Champions were the Ottosuns, a group of dads from Ottoson Middle School.

A panel of judges – Superintendent Kathy Bodie, Carol Band and Steve McHugh – will quiz contestants on a variety of topics such as Science, Literature, Sports, History & Current Events, Arts & Entertainment and Arlington trivia.  Want to register a team?

Fun for the entire family, the event is free, and this year will include trivia, design challenges, activities and prizes – for kids and audience members too!

The Trivia Bee will also air on ACMi’s Public Cable Channel (Comcast 8, RCN 3, Verizon 31).

"It’s always fun to see parents, selectmen, community leaders,  teachers and principals come together for a good time in support of AEF’s work," said Jane Biondi, the event’s organizer.

Proceeds from this community event support the work of the foundation, which provides grants to educators for creative new projects and system-wide initiatives in the Arlington Public Schools.

In fiscal 2012, community donations enabled AEF to award nearly $100,000 in grants to the Arlington public schools. This year’s sponsors include Belmont Orthodontics, Belmont Pediatrics, Belmont Savings Bank, Watertown Savings Bank, East Cambridge Savings Bank, Quad Cycles, Winchester Savings Bank, Derby Farm, Mirak Automotive Group, Andrina’s Pizza, Arlington Swifty Printing, American Alarm & Communications, Arlington Heights Nursery School and Tugboat 23 Consulting.

Come down to Town Hall to cheer on the teams.

    Sexting: D.A.'s advice

Kathleen Bodie, superintendent of schools, sent the following information to parents and guardians Monday, May 20, from Middlesex District Attorney Marian Ryan: Ms. Ryan wants to inform parents and students about the realities of "sexting," which is reportedly on the rise. I encourage all parents/guardians to read this fact sheet and be vigilant about your son/daughter's Internet activities. ...

Cut out voters in finance revamp? No, moderator says

The following viewpoint was submitted by John D. Leone, moderator of Arlington's Town Meeting: The most important vote at this year’s Town Meeting, was not the passage of our budget and capital plan, the leaf-blower bylaw compromise (passed) or the plastic water bottle ban (failed).  It was the unceremonious and near unanimous, no-action vote on Article 22.   For those unaware, Article 22 sought permission from Town Meeting for the selectmen to file home-rule legislation to allow for the creation of an appointed "coordinated department of municipal finance" and the dissolution of the elected treasurer’s position. In essence, this misguided article wanted to eliminate the elected treasurer position and replace the entire office of the treasurer with a new coordinated finance department headed by an appointed director of finance under the authority of the town manager. ...

    Abuse case stirs further queries

The following commentary was written by Peter Fuller, a Precinct 20 Town Meeting member, and published in February. His views expand on those expressed earlier on the Arlington email list and include points that others raised and asked him about. His comments remain relevant in May: The Arlington Boys & Girls Club sent a letter, dated Feb. 7, 2013, to current members, informing them of an investigation into allegations of sexual abuse of children at the Club. While this letter reads as apologetic in tone and at first reading seemingly complete in explaining the situation, some statements in the letter raise further questions: ...
