Roache's Sporting Goods

Porter Square sporting-goods shop has Arlington ties

Roach's Sporting Good, the last spot in Cambridge to legally buy a gun or rifle, is going out of business after 108 years. One of the owners, Joe Callanan of Arlington, said of the family-owned shop at 1957 Mass. Ave. that repeat customers from the city and the surrounding area supported the store for generations.

"They’ve always loved that here in the middle of the city is a real outdoors store," he told The Globe.

Callanan and his brother Chuck are part of the third generation of his family to run Roach's. He said the store cannot afford to renew its lease, and it will close this month.

Among the independently owned stores in Cambridge to close in recent years are the Globe Corner Bookstore in Harvard Square and Bob Slate Stationer shops in Harvard Square and in Porter Square, a few doors from Roach's.
